Floor Lamp Height and Placement for a Reading Chair

A reading floor lamp has one job: put enough light on the page without putting the bulb in your eyes. Most lamps that fail at it are the wrong height for the chair, not the wrong brightness. Here is how to match the two.

Height: bottom of the shade at shoulder level

When you are seated, the bottom edge of the shade should sit roughly at shoulder height, about 40–42 in (100–107 cm) from the floor for a standard armchair with an 18 in seat. That puts the light source just behind and above your sightline. Lower and you look straight into the bulb; higher and the light spreads across the room instead of the page.

In lamp specs that means an overall height of 58–64 in (147–163 cm) for a lamp with a shade, or an arc/gooseneck that can bring the head down to about 40–48 in above the floor.

Quick check: sit in the chair, hold a book where you actually read, and have someone measure from the floor to the top of the book. The shade bottom should be 12–24 in (30–60 cm) above that, and 12–18 in behind your shoulder.

Position: behind and to the side

  • Set the lamp behind the chair, 12–18 in (30–45 cm) to one side, on the side opposite your writing hand if you also make notes.
  • For a sofa, put the lamp at the end, not the middle, angled in.
  • Leave 6 in (15 cm) between the shade and any wall or curtain so heat and light have somewhere to go.

Brightness and color

  • Lumens: 450–800 lumens reaches the page at reading level. Above 800 you will dim it anyway.
  • Dimmable matters more here than in any other room; the same lamp serves reading at 100% and TV at 20%.
  • Color temperature: 2700–3000K for evening reading. A lamp with a 3000K/4000K switch also works for daytime paperwork.
  • Shade direction: a downward shade or a directional head lights the page. An open-top torchiere lights the ceiling and is an ambient lamp, not a reading lamp. Don't buy a torchiere for reading unless it has a separate side arm.

Which style for which corner

Situation Lamp type Example
Armchair, no side table, needs adjustability Gooseneck or adjustable-head LED Floor Lamp Bright Tall Standing Lamp – 4 brightness levels, 4 color temperatures
Sofa with a coffee table in front (base can't go in front) Arc lamp reaching over from behind Nordic LED Arc Floor Lamp
Small footprint next to a chair Column with a shade Mid Century Column Floor Lamp
Corner that also needs ambient light Shaded tripod / mushroom Mushroom Tripod Floor Lamp

Base and cord

A reading lamp gets bumped. Pick a base of at least 10 in (25 cm) diameter or a weighted base for anything over 60 in tall, and run the cord along the wall behind the chair, not across the walking side. If the outlet is on the far side, a rechargeable or battery lamp avoids an extension cord on the floor.

Checklist

  • Shade bottom at seated shoulder height, ~40–42 in from the floor
  • Lamp behind and beside the chair, 12–18 in to the side
  • 450–800 lumens, dimmable, 2700–3000K
  • Downward or directional shade, not open-top
  • Weighted base if over 60 in
